ANATOMICAL ASPECTS OF THE PROXIMAL FEMUR OF ADULT BRAZILIANS International Journal of Morphology
Silva,Valter José da; Oda,Juliano Yasuo; Mello Gonçales Sant'Ana,Débora de.
This study had the purpose of enlarging the data on the Brazilian people, providing anatomic fundamentals that allow a better comprehension of clinical and pathological states involving the hip joint. Sixty-six human femurs, 33 right and 33 left, were used, coming from the Laboratory of Human Anatomy of the Universidade Paranaense UNIPAR. All the bones had adult characteristics, but no sex, race or age identifications. None of them presented visible abnormalities or signs of arthrosis. The following morphometric measures were made: angle of the femur neck, circumference of the femur head and neck, length of the femur neck and of the whole bone. The comparative analysis of the angle of the femur neck between the right and left sides of adults...

Biomechanics and structural adaptations of the rat femur after hindlimb suspension and treadmill running BJMBR
Shimano,M.M.; Volpon,J.B..
We microscopically and mechanically evaluated the femurs of rats subjected to hindlimb unloading (tail suspension) followed by treadmill training. Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups containing 12-14 rats: control I (118 days old), control II (139 days old), suspended (tail suspension for 28 days), suspended-released (released for 21 days after 28 days of suspension), and suspended-trained (trained for 21 days after 28 days of suspension). We measured bone resistance by bending-compression mechanical tests of the entire proximal half of the femur and three-point bending tests of diaphyseal cortical bone. We determined bone microstructure by tetracycline labeling of trabecular and cortical bone. We found that tail suspension weakened...

Femur Properties of Embryo in the Layer Hybrid and Pure Breeds Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Onbaşılar,EE; Güngör,ÖF; Demir,T; Erbay,FK Elibol; Kahraman,M; Taban,S; Çalık,A; Pirpanahi,M.
ABSTRACT Layer hybrids are more superior in the egg yield than pure breeds. But this superiority causes some problems in the bones during the production period. There are a lot of differences among genotypes in the production period that have been examined extensively, however, the differences throughout incubation period aren’t known yet. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in femur properties of pure breed and layer hybrid embryos during the incubation period. A total of 354 fresh hatching eggs were used from one hybrid (Lohman White) and two pure breeds (Denizli & Gerze). The eggs were incubated. Hatching eggs from each genotype at the beginning of embryonic days (E) 19 and E21 were examined. At these embryonic ages, 12...

Shil,Subrata Kumar; Quasem,Md. Abul; Rahman,Mohammad Lutfur; Kibria,A. S. M. Golam; Uddin,Mohi; Ahasan,A. S. M. Lutful.
Recent excavated skeleton of an adult female Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus), died in dystokia in Bangladesh was used for macro anatomical study. Some unique morphological features of bones of hind limb were observed. Pelvic canal was more oval and the wings of ilium were wider. Rump slope was about 36°. Angle between femur and tibia was close to 180°. In Femur, the major trochanter was located at the lower level of head. Minor trochanter, fovea capitis and trochanteric ridge were absent. Supracondyloid fossa was shallow but the intercondyloid fossa was deep. Posterior surface of patella possessed a blunt vertical ridge. The articular surfaces of both tibial condyles were clearly concave. The tibia and the fibula were articulated proximally and distally...

Maternal Malnutrition Diet During Lactation Period Leads to Incomplete Catch-Up Growth in Femur of the Pups at Adulthood International Journal of Morphology
Babinski,Monique S. D; Ramos,Cristiane F; Fernandes,Rodrigo M. P; Cardoso,Gilberto P; Babinski,Marcio A.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal protein and energy restriction during lactation, analyzing on morphological dimensions whether there was catch-up growth through normative nutrition restored, as well as on mechanical axis of femur of the offspring at adulthood. At parturition, Wistar rat dams were randomly assigned to the following groups: 1) control group (C) - free access to a standard laboratory diet containing 23 % protein, 2) protein-energy restricted group (PER) - free access to an isoenergetic, protein-restricted diet containing 8 % protein, and 3) energy-restricted group (ER) fed with restricted amounts of a standard laboratory diet. At weaning, all pups were separated of dams and received free access to a standard...

Measurements of femoral angles, femur length, and hip width in cat radiographs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonseca,R.L.; Lobo-Jr,A.R.; Santana,M.I.S..
ABSTRACT Femoral angle, femur length, and hip width were measured in radiographs of 92 intact domestic cats, males and females of mixed breed from the Center for Zoonosis Control of the Federal District. The animals showed no trauma, orthopedic diseases or angular deformities and had closed physeal lines. Accordingly, we measured aLPFA (anatomical lateral proximal femoral angle, aLDFA (anatomical lateral distal femoral angle), mLPFA (mechanical lateral proximal femoral angle), mLDFA (mechanical lateral distal femoral angle), IA (femoral inclination angle), FL (femur length) and HW (hip width) using ventrodorsal radiographs, with both hindlimbs in a single exposure to an X-ray beam centered on the hip. The mean values of the variables were: mLPFA:...

Mineral composition, histomorphometry, and bone biomechanical properties are improved with probiotic, prebiotic, and symbiotic supplementation in rats chronically exposed to passive smoking: a randomized pre-clinical study Ciência Rural
Tribst,Marcelo Fernandes; Magalhães,Leticia Rocha; Silva,Ricardo Augusto; Caetano,Heliard Rodrigues dos Santos; Oliveira,Weber Gutemberg Alves de; Rufino,Marcos Natal; Keller,Rogéria; Sanches,Osimar de Carvalho; Louzada,Mario Jefferson Quirino; Bremer-Neto,Hermann.
ABSTRACT: Cigarette smoke in large centers is one of the most important causes of chronic inflammatory diseases in public health and is associated with a decrease in bone mass, consolidation process, and bone remodeling. Due to their ability to improve intestinal absorption and compete with pathogenic microorganisms, dietary supplementation with functional foods may contribute to improvement in bone quality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of functional, probiotic, prebiotic, or symbiotic food supplementation on mineral composition, histomorphometry, and bone biomechanical properties of rats in the growth phase, chronically exposed to cigarette smoke (T).Sixty-four young male rats were randomly assigned to eight groups...

Morphometric Study of the Proximal Femur Extremity in Brazilians International Journal of Morphology
de Sousa,Eduardo Branco; Fernandes,Rodrigo Mota Pacheco; Mathias,Marcelo Bezerra; Rodrigues,Mauro Roberto; Ambram,Albert James; Babinski,Marcio Antonio.
Brazilian populational aging besides higher life expectancy has increased the incidence of proximal femoral fractures. Treatment of those fractures uses implants which are based in measurements performed in caucasians, including the 135 degrees cervical-diaphyseal angle. Knowing femoral morphometry allows evaluating implants adequability. We performed our study using 110 Brazilian human femurs (49 right and 61 left). We excluded from the study: bones submitted to osteosyntesis, to prosthetization or those showing abnormalities or malformations which could affect its structure and shape. Bones were submitted to roetgenographic analysis and the images were scanned and transferred to personal computer. Measurements were obtained by AutoCad software and...

Study of the Collo-diaphyseal Angle of the Femur of Corpses in the Anatomy Department of the PUC-SP Medical School International Journal of Morphology
Caetano,Edie Benedito; Serafim,Alexandre Geranutti; Padoveze,Emerson Henrique.
In Brazilian literature the works are scarce on the collo-diaphyseal angle (CDA) in Brazilians, as well as, in relation to the other measures that can be acquired in the proximal portion of the femur, as the femur axle length (FAL), femur neck width (FNW), and the femur head diameter (FHD).This study had the purpose of enlarging the data on the Brazilian people, providing anatomic fundamentals that allow a better comprehension of clinical and pathological states involving the hip joint. All these measures were gotten in millimeters (mm) through a paquimeter and a goniometer for the same researcher. Eighty-seven bones were analyzed, being 40 (46%) right femurs and 47 (56%) left femurs. The bones were in their complete form and they were from adult corpse....
